Hydormeteorological Scientific Research Institute (HMSRI) at Uzhydromet in collaboration with the University of Reading, UK organised a scientific and practical seminar on “Improving forecast of extreme rainfall for risk reduction in Central Asia” on July 19 2023.

The seminar was organised in a hybrid (offline and online) format, in which the representatives from the Reading University, HMSRI, Uzhydromet, National University of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as researchers from Kazgidromet and Central Asian Glaciology Center participated.

At the seminar, researcher Mamadjanova G.A. presented the possibilities of forecasting flash floods and debris flows in Central Asian countries, especially in Uzbekistan, based on the ecPoint-Rainfall forecast of the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The event participants were given instructions on how to use a new operational forecast product on precipitation the ecPoint-Rainfall on ECMWF open platform.

This seminar aimed at improving skills and knowledge of weather forecasters at operational service, doctoral students and young researchers working on forecasting heavy rainfalls, warning of flood hazards, monitoring and preventing hydrometeorological hazards, working with residents during the floods, and assessing this risk.
